I was going to write about Billy Hamilton. I was going to write about how he lights up my fan-heart and makes me happy to watch baseball. I was going to, until the front office failed. I was going to give you a nice piece, something to smile about, and the Cincinnati Reds front office has ruined it.
I, along with many who have paid attention to the minutia of the 2018 Cincinnati Reds baseball season, have thought, wrote, said, and stood by the idea that the Reds traded Devin Mesoraco for Matt Harvey so that they could flip him. Take a reclamation project, work it out, and then reap something. Needless to say, no.
The Reds balked. They balked like a pitcher worried about Billy Hamilton swiping second. They balked like Homer Bailey forgetting the ball is in his glove in the middle of his stretch to the plate. It is rumored that the Brewers were offering something. Lets face it, something was more than they would have gotten for Mez. Something is what they would have had with Harvey’s vacated rotation spot. Instead, the Reds have nothing.
According to C. Trent Rosecrans, of The Athletic, Nick Krall stated that they want to build positive momentum to end the year…
What? Are you joking? No one else can do that? Creating positive momentum is what they’re doing? So trotting out a 1-12 pitcher with an ERA that matches the entire Indians rotation (ok, maybe a hyperbole)? Positive momentum is remaining with a six-man rotation in which young arms like Cody Reed, Michael Lorenzen, Lucas Sims, and others are relegated to the bullpen or AAA? Positive momentum is created by giving meaningless innings to a player who will be on the not-Reds next year? Oh my…
Yeah, I’m going to go get a drink. It’s five o’clock, somewhere…
Could he? Would he? May he? Things looking slightly up for the Reds prospects of getting Dallas Keuchel.
