Here Comes Homer

The Cincinnati Reds (59-80) will look to avoid a sweep at the hand of the Pittsburgh Pirates (68-71) on Wednesday night with the one, the only, Homer Bailey toeing the rubber.

The Pirates have shut down the Reds hitters, not named Scooter Gennett, leading to the pair of losses they have handed them. 13 hits and four runs is all the Redlegs have mustered against the Buccos. Meanwhile, allowing five runs and seven runs, respectively, the Reds pitching hasn’t been much help.

Enter Homer Bailey. If there is one thing that can be said on the positive side for Daniel Dewitt, it’s that he has rocked against Pittsburgh in his career. He is 10-7 with a 3.68 ERA and, you know, has a couple of no-hitters against them.

That being said, he is at a crossroads tonight. Either the Pirates get a bit of revenge on him in this, one of the downest of down years for a pitcher, or Homer breaks his streak and gets a win. No other pitcher in the history of baseball…you heard me, the history of the entire sport…has had this sort of run of bad pitching. Call it bad luck, call it whatever you want, Homer is the singular, the only pitcher to ever see his team lose 18 of his first 19 starts.

Only. One. Ever.

I mean, come on, at some point the hate has to flip, right? It’s easier to hate Homer Bailey, right now, than it is to hate just about anything else, it seems, for the fine folks of the Queen City. I’ll put my hand up there, I am rooting for him tonight. So, yeah, table for one please.

Meanwhile, Scooter has taken his place back atop the NL, in terms of batting average. His .322 mark is the best in the league and he has, so far, put together the best on-base-plus-slugging (.884) performance for a Reds 2nd baseman not named Morgan.

Because of Tuesday-night’s loss, the Pirates have clinched a winning record against the Reds in 2018.
